My name is Valerie Chiykowski, and I’m emailing from the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) at the University of Toronto. Every two months we give fifty female high school students from Ontario the opportunity to learn, in a hands-on way, about the world of science and technology-based entrepreneurship. Accepted students are invited to attend one of the CDL’s Session days where they are matched with a CDL Fellow or Associate (their mentor) whom they will shadow for the day. Mentors include Col. Chris Hadfield (astronaut), Ted Livingston (Founder & CEO of Kik Messenger), Karin Klein (Founder, Bloomberg Beta) and others.
We are currently seeking student applicants for October 22 or 23, 2019.
The application and logistical details can be found in the following link: http://go.pardot.com/e/503501/ ool-girls-program-application- /wwpwxq/322634377?h=HvIQ_ N96cdsxTvk- 4Jl11IUM2i1LWFEVcynJzL1PKag
Since the launch of the program last year, we have had over 300 students attend this program across the nation. There is no cost to participate in this program and applications are open to any student registered in a secondary school. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the event location.
If you or a student you know would like to see what past participants have to say about the program, please read one of these blog posts:
● CDL: How to Make your Idea Stand Out by Zaynah who spent a day shadowing Tony Lacavera, the founder of Wind Mobile (now Freedom Mobile)
● Session 1: My Amazing Mentorship Experience At CDL & What I Learned From Top Tech Entrepreneurs by Riya who spent a day shadowing Dan Debow, founder of Rypple, Workbrain, and Helpful.ai
● The real key to creating a high-impact business - CDL Reflection by Ananya who shadowed Ken Nickerson, CEO of iBinary and Board Member at OMERS Ventures
For more information about the CDL, Sean Silcoff of the Globe and Mail wrote a detailed cover story about the program and its recent expansion titled Billion Dollar Breakout in March 2017.
Ideal candidates are comfortable speaking in public (students are often asked to introduce themselves to a room of entrepreneurs, scientists, and investors), have an interest in science and technology, and are motivated to learn about entrepreneurship.
Selected students will spend a full day following their mentor to a variety of short meetings with high potential new startups on the University of Toronto St. George Campus at the Rotman School of Management (105 St. George Street, Toronto). Students will observe and occasionally participate in objectives-setting meetings where their CDL mentors, the Fellows and Associates, provide advice to new, high potential startups.
The deadline to apply for the next selection round is October 1, 2019 at 11:59 PM EST, but applicants will be assessed and admitted on a first-come first-serve basis. Please share this opportunity with other educators or directly with students that you believe would benefit from the program.
If you have any questions feel free to send me an email.
Thank you,
Val
