Free Body Diagram Practice

Hello All,

Great work this week! Please practice completing free body diagrams for various situations. Remember that if an object is:

NOT ACCELERATING (at rest or moving at constant velocity): all the forces acting on the object are balanced (Fnet=0)

ACCELERATING (speeding up or slowing down): There is an unbalanced force (Fnet is not equal to zero)

Here are a few pictures or situations that you can use to create free body diagrams (FBD). You can now look at any object and draw the FREE BODY DIAGRAM!!! the world is a bunch of arrows!

  • Don't forget to make a coordinate system
  • Make sure you determine how the object's motion is changing so that you can make sure the forces balance or do not according to the situation

1) Airplane taking off but still on the ground.

2) Rocket on the launch pad

3) Parked car on hill

4) Person on tight rope

ETC.....

Have fun!

  2. complete a lab book entry with the following: (will be marked)
    1. date and entry name
    2. design sketches including dimensions
    3. recorded data (height, mass and load)
    4. calculation for competition [ (height x load) / mass ) ** do not forget about units!!!

Due Tuesday

 Have fun!!
