Projectile Motion Competition - SPH3U/SPH4C

Hello all,

Let's give this a try! Design and build a machine that will allow you to launch a projectile at a specific level target a minimum of 1.5 meters away.

Allowable materials:

2 newspapers
masking tape
elastic bands
Anything from a recycling bin

Criteria:

projectile - marble or #2-#3 stopper
Minimum range - 1.5m
can be disassembled and have all materials compostable, recyclable or reusable except the tape

Task:

  1. design/build
  2. test and calibrate
  3. compete: RZ will place a target within your maximum range and you will have once chance to hit it.

Deliverables: (In lab booklet)

  1. Date and title
  2. design sketches with dimensions
  3. Testing and calibrating data:
    1. max range
    2. angle vs. range and/or speed vs. range
    3. calculation(s) or formulas to determine a specific range
  4.  competition
    1. calculation for competition target.
    2. Distance vs the center of target _________

Projectile Motion - SPH3U/SPH4C

Hello All,

We will do an example or two today in class then it is up to you to practice and solidify your understanding.

You can play with this interactive simulation. Try and see what angle gives you the largest X displacement.

Try this one and state what conditions need to me met so that the target (toy monkey) is hit.

you can practice with the TURD game!!!

Investigating Gravity Inquiry Lab - SPH3U1/SPH4C1

Hello all,

here is the link for the physics handbook. Please use it to support you with lab work.

In this lab you are tasked with determining the effect of mass on the acceleration due to gravity. Please follow the inquiry method and produce a typed formal laboratory write up with the grade 11 expectations. Appendices will be evaluated.

A reminder that only raw data can be shared between group members and all other components of a lab report needs to be original individual work.

Have fun!!!!

Here are some guidelines for the report writing process.

Reports need to have proper formatting including the following:

  1. Title and abstract/introduction (a short intro that provides the rational and content of the report)
  2. Headings and subheadings
  3. Clearly listing sources of information and rational for any assumptions/approximation made
  4. Lab formatting rules apply (graphs, figures, appendix, calculations, etc.)
  5. Attractiveness and professionalism (font size, images, captions/labels, location of text vs. figures, page breaks, colour, etc.)
  6. use equation editor for sample calculations or do by hand.
Here is a link to a similar report that you may use as a guideline for formatting.
